Why I photograph in Black & White | Pittsburgh New York Motherhood Photographer
/I photograph in black and white because I value art and believe black and white photographs are timeless. There is no distraction within a black and white photograph, there is something 'raw' about it; which allows emotions and connections to be the main focus.
Distraction-free
“When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls.” - Ted Grant.
As much as I like photographs in colour, when it comes to portraits my heart belongs to black and white! I love that straight-away our focus is on the persons portrayed on the photographs and the connections amongst them; not the shirt they wear or the piece of furniture behind them.
Enhance emotions
As a maternity and newborn photographer, emotions and connections are everything to me! When you want for emotions to be the focus of an image, nothing does that better than stripping away the distraction of colour and letting the simplicity of black and white photography do the rest.
Timeless
Black and white portraits are classic and timeless. Part of why I do what I do is because I believe in giving the gift of memories to the future generation; I also have a love for printed portraits, both in albums and framed. This means that it is very important to me that my images pass the test of time and be as meaningful and beautiful in thirty years…
Creative Choice
I choose to photograph in black and white also from an artist point of view. Photographing in black and white pushes my creativity and gives me more satisfaction. It pushes the way I see light and connection; it challenges my editing skills and composition. I have always been more attracted by black and white photography in general, and shortly after I started photography my decision had been made.
