How to choose the right newborn photographer (Part 2)

Finding the right photographer for you and your family can be tricky; and this blog serie (2 parts) aims to help you in your search and selection, with steps to follow and questions to ask the photographer but also yourself before booking your session. You can read the part one here.

Portfolio Review

Once you have answered the suggested questions (part 1) and determined your expectations, look back at the photographers you have selected and review their portfolio and services. Only keep those whose portfolio and services match what you now know you are looking for.

Learn more about your photographer

The ‘about’ page of their website and their social media profiles will typically give you more details about the photographer, maybe even an idea of their personality. It is a good place to start.  I also recommend contacting each of the photographers you have now selected to discuss your family session with them.

This last step is an important one. You need to feel comfortable with your photographer. Make a list of all the questions you want to ask before the call to make sure you don’t forget an important detail. Below are some suggestions:

  • How far in advance to book?

  • What are their availabilities? Do they work weekdays/weekends?

  • Do they prefer working with babies of a certain age?

  • What images they provide?

  • What is included in their session fees/packages?

  • What to wear and how to dress the newborn?

  • How to prepare your home if the session occurs at home?

  • Are there travel fees?

  • How is the studio setting if the session occurs at a studio? Is there parking available? Is it easily accessible? Is there an elevator? Etc.

  • Do they have professional insurance? What are their studio policies? What is their cancellation policy?

  • How long is the waiting period to receive your photographs?

  • How will you receive the photographs?

  • What is the full process from booking to receiving your order?
